Jen Porter
Project Manager, Pathways Fund
As Project Manager of the Pathways Fund, Jen is working to design and build New Profit's recently-launched Social Innovation Fund initiative. She works with New Profit's Pathways team, funding partners, and portfolio organizations to develop investment selection processes, manage operational planning and budgeting, and create effective channels for communication and reporting.
Jen has always been rather baffled by her self-reported polarized interests. On the one-hand, she thrives off analytics and organization; on the other, she has a passion for the artistic - for all things pleasing and especially the decidedly non-pleasing. These opposite preferences proved a quandary when it came to choosing a field of study and work. After years of bouncing between majors and career paths - from vocal performance to journalism, and art history to accounting - Jen finally chose organizational behavior because it provided a nice blend between the creative and the concrete. Following graduation, she rejoiced to find fulfillment working in venture philanthropy, which blends analytical absolutes with opportunities to creatively build more effective paths to positive social change.

Jen came to New Profit in June 2009 as the Operations Associate, in which capacity she managed the organization's finances and coordinated the internal operations of each department. Before coming to New Profit and while attending college, she worked as the Program Director for MicroBusiness Mentors, a business training and microcredit organization based in the Utah Valley. At MBM, she oversaw the organization's public relations, hiring, strategy, and partnerships. Prior to MBM, she lived in California, Salt Lake City, and London, working in finance and accounting, researching microfinance, and studying art history. She plans to enter the MBA program at Harvard University in the fall of 2011.

Jen spent five years studying classical and contemporary singing and is now a member of the Cambridge Chamber Singers, as well as an accomplished sing-in-the-shower jazz performer. Generally believing that being in the air is better than being on the ground, she seizes every opportunity to rock climb, travel by plane, scale stale avalanches, and stand up to her full height of 6'1".

Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their mind wake in the day to find that all was vanity; but the dreamers of the day...act their dream with open eyes, and make it possible.
